Nigeria’s Sports Minister John Enoh has confirmed that the appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles is imminent. In an interview on Politics Tonight on Channels TV, Enoh assured that the announcement of the new coach would be made without further delay.
The Super Eagles have been without a coach since Finidi George resigned in June following a lackluster performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. During his tenure, the former Enyimba coach, now with Rivers United, led the team to two draws and a defeat before his departure.
With less than 30 days remaining until the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match against Benin Republic, the football community remains uncertain about who will lead the Super Eagles. To reassure fans, Enoh emphasized the urgency of the appointment, particularly with the upcoming AFCON qualifier scheduled for September 7.
“The appointment will be sooner rather than later,” the Sports Minister said.
John Enoh’s statement comes on the heels of Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where the country failed to secure a medal.
Amid speculation, several names—including Hervé Renard, Eric Chelle, Samson Siasia, and Salisu Yusuf—have been linked to the vacant Super Eagles coaching position. However, the Nigeria Football Federation has kept details of the selection process under wraps.
