Mounir Nasraoui, the father of 17-year-old Spanish football star Lamine Yamal, was reportedly stabbed multiple times in a car park in Mataró, a coastal town north of Barcelona, on Wednesday night.
Spanish media reports indicate that the attack followed an earlier altercation between Nasraoui and a group of individuals while he was walking his dog. Hours later, the same group allegedly confronted him in the car park and stabbed him. Catalan police have arrested at least three suspects in connection with the attack. Nasraoui was initially rushed to a Barcelona hospital in serious condition but is now reported to be stable and expected to remain under observation for two to three days.
The stabbing occurred near the Rocafonda neighborhood, where Yamal grew up. The motive for the attack is currently unclear. This incident comes shortly after Yamal, Spain’s youngest-ever player, was named Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024. Yamal played a crucial role in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the final. The streets of Mataró had been filled with celebrations honoring Yamal, who spent part of his childhood in the town before joining Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy.
