The news was confirmed on Friday morning by Dr. Kayode Ajulo, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, marking a profound loss for the nation’s legal landscape.

Justice Uwais leaves behind an indelible legacy of judicial excellence, having served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. Throughout his distinguished tenure, he was widely revered for his unwavering commitment to judicial integrity and his tireless efforts toward meaningful reforms within the justice system. His dedication to upholding the rule of law earned him immense respect across all sectors.

Even after stepping down from the Supreme Court, Justice Uwais continued to serve the country with distinction. The late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua recognized his profound wisdom and integrity, appointing him to chair the pivotal Presidential Electoral Reform Committee. This influential committee brought together a diverse group of prominent Nigerians, including esteemed figures like Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and renowned human rights advocate, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, underscoring the trust placed in Justice Uwais’s leadership to guide crucial national discussions.
