After a 15-year hiatus, Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has returned to politics and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State. Sources close to the matter confirm that the former senator participated in the APC’s e-registration exercise, marking her official membership in the party.
Iyabo, who represented Ogun Central Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011, had relocated to the United States to pursue her academic career, rising to the rank of professor. Her decision to join the APC has sparked speculation about her plans for the 2027 general elections.
A close ally, Biodun Ajayi, confirmed that Iyabo registered as an APC member on Tuesday, saying, “I can confirm to you that Prof Iyabo Obasanjo completed her online registration as a member of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.” Another source, a former House of Representatives member, also verified the development.
The move comes after campaign billboards bearing Iyabo’s image surfaced in Abeokuta, fueling rumors about her possible return to partisan politics. The billboards read, “In Ogun State, we know ourselves. Sen (Prof) Iyabo Obasanjo. Omo wa ni, eniyan wa ni, ara wa ni,” translating to “She is our daughter, she is our person, she is part of us.”
Speaking on the billboards, Iyabo said they were erected by her supporters, adding, “There are some people who have worked with me in the past. They came together and said, ‘This is who we like’.” Iyabo has given her supporters the go-ahead, sparking speculation about her plans for elective office in 2027
