The world of gospel music is in mourning following the passing of Dr. Ron Kenoly, a legendary figure whose ministry defined a generation of worship. Known as the “Professor of Praise,” Kenoly died peacefully on Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, at the age of 81.
Bruno Miranda, Kenoly’s longtime music director, confirmed the news and reflected on the late worship leader’s unwavering dedication. “This morning, we said goodbye to Dr. Ron Kenoly… He was never an artist, never an entertainer. He was a worship leader,” Miranda said. “We grieve deeply, but not without hope. The worship he lived is now the worship he beholds.”
For many, especially millennials, Ron Kenoly’s music was the soundtrack of their childhood. Those who grew up in Nigerian homes during the 90s and early 2000s likely remember Sunday mornings or school runs filled with his powerful albums. With hits like “Ancient of Days,” “Lift Him Up,” “Jesus Is Alive,” and the deeply moving “Anointing Fall On Me,” Kenoly brought a vibrant, big-band energy to gospel music that transformed worship services across the nation.
The news of his passing sparked heartfelt tributes from leaders in the Nigerian gospel scene. Nathaniel Bassey wrote, “Dr. Ron Kenoly crosses to yonder side. Thank you for inspiring generations of psalmists like me. I grew up on these songs, and today, others are growing up on ours. Thank you, sir.” Dunsin Oyekan added, “Honouring a General! Rest in Peace, Dr. Ron Kenoly. An end of an era… You are now singing Forever in His Presence.”
Kenoly’s contributions to gospel music were widely recognized. He received the GMA Dove Award for Praise and Worship Album of the Year in 1997 for Welcome Home, which also topped the Billboard contemporary worship charts.
He leaves behind his wife, Diana, who also serves as a UN Ambassador, their three sons—Samuel, Ronald Jr., and Tony, popularly known as the Kenoly Brothers—and several grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of faith and music.
