The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has paid tribute to the late Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, describing him as one of the most outstanding legal minds in Nigeria’s history.

Justice Uwais, who passed away in Abuja just days before his 89th birthday, was the second-longest-serving Chief Justice in the country’s history. His death, which marked the end of a remarkable era in the nation’s judiciary, drew heartfelt reactions from across the legal community.

In a statement personally signed by the CJN and made available to Zoyols Blog, she described the late jurist as a reformer and statesman whose life reflected unshakable dedication to justice and constitutional order. According to her, his legacy in championing judicial independence, advancing democratic principles, and promoting the rule of law will continue to resonate for generations.

Justice Kekere-Ekun recalled his years of service at the apex court, from 1979 until his appointment as Chief Justice in 1995, a position he held until 2006. She praised his clarity of thought, legal brilliance, and consistent defence of justice, noting that even in retirement, Justice Uwais remained deeply engaged in national development, most notably by chairing the Electoral Reform Committee.

Describing his life as one of deep national impact, the CJN extended her condolences to the family, judiciary, and the nation, expressing confidence that his legacy will endure.

Also paying homage, the Supreme Court of Nigeria reflected on Justice Uwais’ instrumental role in shaping the judiciary. In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Akande Festus, the apex court credited the late CJN with laying the groundwork for the modern judicial system, including the establishment of the National Judicial Council (NJC), which has been pivotal in safeguarding the independence of the judiciary.

The court praised his dedication to legal education and mentorship, adding that many of today’s legal professionals owe part of their growth to his influence and guidance.

Justice Uwais is remembered not only for his judicial contributions but for his unwavering integrity and tireless pursuit of fairness. His absence will be deeply felt within and beyond the legal community.
