The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into the latest controversy surrounding medical supply contracts issued to 44 local governments in the state.
This appeal was made by APC Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas. In a statement released in Kano, Abbas called for the suspension of financial accounts of local government councils to prevent further misuse of resources under the pretense of collaborative projects. He expressed skepticism about Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s claim of ignorance regarding the corruption scandal, suggesting it points to poor governance or lack of control over the state.
Abbas criticized the state’s Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigation directive as inadequate, questioning the impartiality of its chairman, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, who is accused of partisanship and a lack of authority. He also highlighted concerns about the involvement of the governor’s father-in-law’s family and Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso in the alleged scandal.
The APC Chairman raised issues with the award of contracts worth ₦27 billion for two interchange bridges in Kano, emphasizing that the payment terms were split 30/70 between the state and local governments. He also pointed to unresolved allegations of financial mismanagement, including the misuse of palliatives by a Cabinet Office political appointee.
In response, State Commissioner for Information Baba Halilu Dantiye praised Governor Yusuf for initiating an inquiry into the drug supply procurement process. He stated that the contract award for the interchange roads followed due process and is open for public scrutiny. Dantiye expressed surprise at the APC’s resistance to investigations and encouraged them to allow the probes to proceed if they have nothing to hide.
Dantiye also noted public demands for an investigation into the alleged misuse of local government funds by the former First Lady, who is accused of misappropriating funds through 44 bank accounts during her tenure. He assured the public that Governor Yusuf’s administration is committed to accountability and enforcing legal standards in procurement processes.
