Amad Diallo has found himself at the center of controversy after a video surfaced showing the Manchester United winger making an obscene gesture towards fans during the club’s post-season tour in Kuala Lumpur. The moment, captured outside the team hotel, quickly made the rounds on social media and drew widespread attention.
Manchester United later issued a statement clarifying that Amad’s reaction followed “serious personal abuse” directed at him, particularly involving offensive comments about his mother. While the club confirmed that the abuse was not racially motivated, they acknowledged the intensity and personal nature of the remarks.
Taking to social media, the 22-year-old Ivorian addressed the incident directly. “I have respect for people, but not for the one who insults my mum,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I shouldn’t have reacted like that, but I don’t regret what I did.”
Some speculation had suggested the abuse stemmed from fans shouting “Diallo” — a name the player no longer uses. Amad, who was previously known as Amad Traore, dropped the surname following legal issues surrounding his move to Italy as a teenager. In 2021, he was fined by the Italian FA for using falsified documents related to his immigration to the country during his time with Atalanta.
Amad played in the second half of United’s 1-0 loss to the ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday. The club will wrap up their tour with a match in Hong Kong on Friday
